Whenever we start a new project, we look at the entire home … including all of the nooks. One of our favorite ways to make a statement in a room is by styling built-ins and bookshelves. Instead of hiding books in storage, we look to display them in fun and interesting ways.
Here are the things we’ve learned and what we’ve done that have made a difference:
Who said bookshelves are just for books? Partnering books with small accessories (i.e. frames, bookends etc.) can create dimension and interest.
2. Wallpaper or paint the inside.
Another way we love to dress up a bookshelf is by wallpapering or painting the inside. This is a great way to soften the space and adds warmth to what otherwise could be a stark, bare bookshelf. The contrasting color on the back of the shelves will make the items on display pop.
3. Library lights
Adding overhead lighting, or library lights, to a bookshelf is a small way to make a big difference. The lighting creates a showcase for your books and collections while adding a sense of drama to a room.
Hanging a great piece framed art is one of our favorite ways to dress up a bookshelf. This creates a three-dimensional feel and breaks up the monotony of the lines of a bookshelf. Its unexpected, which is what we love.
5. Mix it up.
A fun way to mix it up with bookshelves is by stacking the books in creative ways or organizing them by color. Its a simple way to take your bookshelf up a notch.
